Underwriters
Laboratories INC. |
|
Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) is an
independent, non-profit product testing, certification and standards
development organization that has been involved in the roofing industry
since 1903. UL is not part of or financed by the federal government.
Manufacturers voluntarily chose to have their products submitted for testing
and safety performance certification. Recognized initially for testing of
electrical products, UL soon responded to a call for safety testing on
other product types. There are currently some 18000 types of products UL
evaluates. UL is the most universally recognized and respected testing
agency for such services around the world. |

Many municipalities' codes, laws and regulations insist that roofing
products and roof systems be tested, listed and/or certified and labeled by
a national organization before the products can be used or installed in
their jurisdiction. UL testing of roof systems normally
encompasses the following test standards: |
|
UL 790- Fire
Resistance (three separate tests)
Spread of flame
Intermittent spread of flame
Burning brand
UL2218-
Impact Resistance
(click here for more details of test)
UL 970- Wind Resistance. |
|
"Tested by UL" does not necessarily mean the product has been "certified by
UL". UL certified and labeled products have not only been evaluated/tested
and found to be in compliance with UL testing requirements but are manufactured
under UL's ongoing Follow-Up Service Program. This Follow-Up Service Program entails
periodic inspection of manufacturing facilities and quality control
procedures by UL field representatives, and examination and/or testing of
product samples from the factory, the open market, or elsewhere. This
third party control of product quality is assurance of ongoing
attention to performance specifications as defined in the UL testing
protocol. This means much more than just "UL
tested" which merely indicates a given sample tested on a given day passed
UL test requirements. |
|
UL "certifies" and "lists" products as meeting their testing requirements, but
they do not "approve" products. Product approval is the prerogative of the
appropriate authority having jurisdiction over the product installation.
